Lagos State House of Assembly has announced its plan to come up with a Bill that would provide for the prohibition of kidnapping in the state.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudshiru Obasa, stated that the intention of the Bill was to further expand the scope of the existing anti-kidnapping law to accommodate new challenges and strategies to curb the menace in the society.

Hon. Tunde Braimoh, representing Kosofe Consistency II observed that kidnapping, which was alien to our society in the past, has now assumed dangerous dimension, leaving fears in the minds of the people.

“We need a strong deterrent to curb this evil act. I believe this bill is very timely and a direct response towards curbing the menace of kidnapping in our society, I urge my colleagues to give it a speedy passage,” he said.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, stressed that the Bill will tackle those that are making kidnapping a charity business, adding that the provision that states that anybody whose property is being used for this evil act will be prosecuted was commendable.

Also, Hon. Mojisola Meiranda, representing Apapa I, stated that “This bill will crown the effort of the Lagos State Government in fighting crimes in the State.

There is also need to educate and sensitise Lagosian to give necessary information to relevant security agencies when they notice suspicious elements and individuals in their community.”
