The labor unions have cautioned state governors against following advice that could cause widespread anger, suffering, and poverty. President Bola Tinubu is currently reviewing the recommendations for the National Minimum Wage put forward by the Tripartite Committee. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) proposed N250,000, while the government and private sector offered N62,000 during the committee’s recent meeting.
According to Comrade Benson Upah, the NLC’s Information Head, the labor unions will follow the decisions of their respective bodies regarding the President’s submission to the National Assembly. Upah emphasized that strikes are considered a last resort and immediate strike action is currently not being pursued due to holidays such as Sallah and Democracy Day.
Upah stressed that the labor movement’s position will depend on the government’s proposal before the National Assembly and highlighted disagreements among government officials, particularly governors who argue they cannot afford even N62,000 each. He underscored that some governors are opposed to the new minimum wage and urged them to reconsider their stance to prevent the country from descending into poverty.
