The backlash comes amid a turbulent season for the club, which included the dismissal of manager Xabi Alonso in January and a growing points gap in the La Liga title race.
Tensions escalated further after Mbappé was seen on holiday in Sardinia with his girlfriend, Ester Expósito. Although he was reportedly recovering from a hamstring injury at the time, many fans interpreted the trip as a lack of dedication following the club’s Champions League exit and their significant deficit behind leaders FC Barcelona.
Reports have also suggested unrest behind the scenes. According to claims, Mbappé was involved in a heated training-ground incident where he allegedly reacted angrily after being flagged offside during a practice session, which may have affected team morale.
In response, his representatives defended him, stating that the criticism is based on an “overinterpretation” of a recovery period that was being closely monitored by the club. They added that the backlash does not reflect the “commitment and work that Kylian does daily for the good of the team.”
Despite the controversy, manager Álvaro Arbeloa has publicly backed the forward, saying players’ personal time should not be scrutinized. At present, Mbappé is not facing any disciplinary action from the club.
