Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, has announced the closure of two privately managed female hostels over reports of alleged immoral behavior and other concerns.
The affected hostels—Al-Ansar Indabo located on UDB Road and another in Hotoro—were previously approved by the university as off-campus housing options due to the lack of on-campus accommodations.
According to a statement from the university’s Vice President of Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, the decision was prompted by complaints involving immoral activities, poor access to water and electricity, incidents of student violence, and unauthorized late-night outings.
“The university has officially withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female hostels at UDB Road and Hotoro,” Dr. Garba stated, urging parents and students to take note.
Students residing in the affected hostels have been instructed to vacate immediately after the ongoing fall semester exams. The university emphasized that it would not be responsible for any issues arising from non-compliance and is coordinating with security personnel to enforce the order.
Some students, however, believe the closure may be more related to the inadequate living conditions than morality concerns. “Whatever misconduct happened must have taken place outside,” one student commented, while another pointed to the lack of basic amenities as a possible cause.
The hostels, which reportedly house around 500 female students—many from outside Kano—are set to be replaced with newly constructed accommodations nearer to campus. One of the new hostels is named in memory of a deceased student.
MAAUN currently depends on partnerships with private developers for student lodging, as it has yet to establish its own on-campus residential facilities.
