On Christmas Day 2022, Drambi Vandi, a police officer, was found guilty of shooting Bolanle Raheem and was sentenced to death by hanging by the Lagos State High Court.
Judge Ibironke Harrison handed down the ruling on Monday, finding the policeman responsible for the death of Bolanle Raheem, a lawyer from Lagos.
“The defendant was convicted of murder on one count by the court. Judge Harrison declared, “You will be hanged by the neck until you are dead.
Raheem, a pregnant lady, was shot and killed on Christmas Day 2022 at the Ajah roundabout in Lagos State while she and her family were traveling to church.
Two days after the incident, Vandi, who works for the Ajah police department’s Ajiwe division, was suspended. The state subsequently filed a single-count murder case against him.
In the trial, which started in January of this year, Vandi’s husband, sister, police armorer, pathologist, and seven other witnesses gave testimony against him. 27 exhibits were also produced by the prosecution.
As the only witness, Vandi asserted that the gun he was carrying the day of the incident was not the source of the bullet that is thought to have killed Raheem.
Additionally, he said that prior to its display in court, he had never seen the bullet.
Vandi was given a hanging death sentence by Justice Harrison notwithstanding his defense.
