A video circulating online shows the moment a Nigerian soldier allegedly assaulted Olalekan Fakoyejo, an editor with TheCable, following a disagreement over traffic in Ikeja.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Saturday, May 2, as Fakoyejo was travelling from Ikeja to Ogba in a commercial tricycle, commonly known as “Keke Napep.”
Soldiers were reportedly managing traffic near an event centre along Ajao Road when one of them stopped a tricycle rider and instructed him to carry a soldier as a form of punishment.
This action allegedly worsened the already heavy traffic, leaving Fakoyejo’s tricycle stuck in the congestion. The journalist reportedly commented to fellow passengers that the soldier’s actions contributed to the gridlock.
A soldier who overheard the remark allegedly ordered Fakoyejo and other passengers to get down before pulling the journalist aside for questioning.
Despite offering an explanation, Fakoyejo was told to report to other officers nearby. However, as he attempted to speak with another approaching officer, the soldier allegedly slapped him.
Footage captured by an eyewitness shows the soldier repeatedly pushing the journalist and attempting to strike him with a stick. During the scuffle, Fakoyejo’s phone reportedly dropped and got damaged.
