Khamenei threatened in a video message aired by national TV on June 26 to carry out more strikes on US bases in the region if Iran came under another attack by the United States. Escalating Rhetoric Threatens Fragile Peace

Iran’s newly positioned supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has issued a stern vow of vengeance following the joint US-Israeli strike that killed his father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei. The declaration comes at a highly volatile moment, just hours after US President Donald Trump issued a fierce warning against any assassination plots targeting American leadership.

In a written statement his first public remarks since his father’s funeral earlier this week Mojtaba Khamenei emphasized that retaliation is a national mandate that will be executed regardless of his own survival or that of other Iranian officials. “Vengeance is the will of our nation and must inevitably be carried out,” Khamenei wrote, adding that Tehran has already compiled a list of high-profile targets.

Trump Warns of ‘Complete Decimation’

The supreme leader’s warning follows a highly combative social media post by President Trump on his Truth Social platform. Trump asserted that any Iranian attempt on his life would trigger a catastrophic military response, claiming that one thousand missiles are currently “locked and loaded” to target the Islamic Republic.

“Orders have already been given, and the US Military is ready, willing, and able… to completely decimate and destroy all areas of Iran” should any assassination attempts occur, Trump warned.

Diplomatic Efforts Under Strain

This intense exchange of threats has severely disrupted an interim agreement aimed at halting a conflict that erupted in late February following massive US-Israeli airstrikes. While Trump has declared the existing ceasefire effectively over, international mediators are working behind the scenes to salvage diplomatic channels.

Key diplomatic developments include:

  • Qatari Mediation: A delegation from Qatar reportedly travelled to Iran to reinforce Doha’s role as a key mediator and de-escalate the situation.
  • Trump’s Stance: While Trump indicated that discussions with Tehran might continue, he simultaneously dismissed them as a “waste of time.”
  • Iranian Compliance: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi defended Tehran’s position, asserting that Iran has abided by the memorandum of understanding signed last month. “There can only be mutual compliance,” Araghchi stated.

As Mojtaba Khamenei assumes power without yet appearing in public since the hostilities began, the region remains on a knife-edge, with the international community watching closely to see if diplomacy can prevail over the threat of mutual destruction.
