A middle-aged woman, Toyin Akinrosotu, was on Monday arrested by the police in Idanre, Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State, after allegedly causing the fatal fall of an infant strapped on the back of its mother.
A witness said the baby fell during a scuffle between the mother of the baby and the suspect.
He said the suspect, who lives at Awolata Street in Idanre, led some thugs to beat up the mother of the dead baby in her house.
Although the child was said to have been rushed to the hospital immediately the incident occurred, it died before doctors could revive her.
Following the death of the baby, the matter was reported to the police, resulting in the arrest of the suspect.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relation Officer, Wole Ogodo, said the “mother of the baby reported the matter to the police and upon investigation, the suspect was arrested”.
Mr. Ogodo disclosed that the command was investigating the issue and the suspect would be charged to court as soon as the investigation is concluded.
He warned that instead of people taking laws into their own hands, they should cultivate the habit of reporting issues to appropriate quarters.
He said the child’s remains have been deposited at Alade Idanre General Hospital mortuary in the town for postmortem examination after pictures were taken.
