In a major boost for civic participation, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks. Originally scheduled to conclude on July 10, the new deadline has now been shifted to Friday, July 24, 2026.
Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, announced the decision on Friday night, July 3, in Abuja. According to Haruna, the extension comes after a comprehensive review of the registration process and critical feedback from political parties, civil society organizations, state offices, and other key electoral stakeholders.
Boosting Inclusivity in the Electoral Process
The CVR exercise, which initially commenced on August 18, 2025, is being extended to give unregistered, eligible Nigerians another window of opportunity to register ahead of future elections. INEC emphasized that this decision underscores its unwavering commitment to ensuring that every eligible citizen is given a fair and reasonable chance to participate in the democratic process.
Introducing Online Self-Service for First-Time Voters
In addition to lengthening the registration window, the electoral umpire has introduced a highly anticipated technological upgrade: a new online self-service registration option designed specifically for eligible first-time voters. Starting Wednesday, July 8, 2026, citizens can access this feature through the dedicated portal, cvr.inecnigeria.org, which will also provide a comprehensive step-by-step guide.
This new digital service offers several key features to make registration more convenient:
- Convenience: Citizens can initiate and complete their registration, including biometric capture, using personal mobile devices or computers without physically visiting an INEC office.
- Verification: The system features state-of-the-art identity verification and biometric validation to confirm applicant data.
- Security: Advanced backend integrity checks have been built into the portal to protect the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
A Call to Action for Unregistered Nigerians
With the deadline extended and new digital tools made available, INEC has strongly urged unregistered but eligible citizens to take full advantage of this window. The commission reiterated its dedication to delivering a highly accessible, credible, and inclusive voter registration system by using modern technology to improve the overall experience for Nigerian voters.
