A Chinese expatriate was killed by gunmen in Ebonyi State, south-east Nigeria.
The attack’s details were still sketchy at the time of filing this report, but sources said it happened on Sunday at a mining site in Iboko, Izzi Local Government Area of the state.
The gunmen allegedly disarmed police officers who were guarding the Chinese man.
The Chinese’s body was said to have been deposited at a mortuary in Abakaliki.
Steve Emenike, the Chairman of Izzi Local Government Area, who confirmed the incident, expressed his displeasure with the killing, which he called a “national embarrassment.”
According to Mr Emenike, the gunmen arrived on motorcycles and caused havoc in the council area’s Otam village.
In response to the incident, he said the local government council reconstituted a vigilante group and banned motorcycle operation between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. until further notice.
Mr Emenike stated that the council was collaborating with the police and the State Security Service to find those responsible for the Chinese deaths.
“We cannot accept or tolerate this wave of insecurity any longer.” “Izzi is peaceful, and we intend to keep it that way for the sake of our people,” he added.
Chris Anyanwu, the police spokesperson in Ebonyi State, said his office had not yet been notified of the incident.
“I believe the signal will arrive tomorrow,” he predicted.
The security situation in south-east Nigeria has worsened, with armed men frequently attacking security officials and security facilities.
The majority of the attacks in the region have been blamed on the separatist group IPOB.
