Prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has urged President Bola Tinubu to take strong diplomatic action following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat of potential military intervention in Nigeria.

Speaking on Sunday, Gumi criticized Trump’s remarks, calling them a “profound disrespect” to Nigeria’s sovereignty. He insisted that the Federal Government summon the U.S. ambassador for an official withdrawal of the statement.

According to him, the threat should not be overlooked, as it challenges Nigeria’s authority on the global stage. Gumi stated that Nigeria could maintain composure without appearing weak.

His words:
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it. President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime.”

He also noted that Nigeria has alternative partners for economic and military cooperation, and should not hesitate to explore them if disrespected.

Background of Trump’s threat

Trump recently named Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” accusing the government of failing to protect Christians and warning that the U.S. “will not stand by” if what he labeled genocide continues. He hinted at possible military action if the situation persists.

However, the Nigerian government has rejected these claims, insisting no religious group is being targeted.

Gumi’s statement adds to a growing list of Nigerian voices condemning Trump’s comments and demanding respect for the country’s sovereignty.

His full statement reads:
“For Trump to threaten a sovereign country with military attack is a profound disrespect to our authority, but we can rise above it. President Tinubu should summon the US ambassador; they either retract their threats or we sever diplomatic ties with this irresponsible regime. There are lots of other options for our economic expansion and military alliance.”
