Oye-Ekiti, Nigeria – The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has announced the suspension of its Students’ Union Government (SUG) president, a director, and a deputy dean following serious allegations of unauthorized collection of funds from students. The university has reiterated its strong commitment to combating corruption and upholding the highest standards of integrity within its academic environment.
The suspensions, detailed in an official statement signed by the university’s Registrar, Mr. Mufutau A. Ibrahim, affect three key figures: Mr. Olanrewaju Patrick Ogunjobi, Director of the Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship; Dr. Banji Rildwan Olaleye, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services; and the SUG President, Mr. James Iyanuoluwa Adio.
Allegations of Unauthorized Collections Detailed
The controversy ignited after the university management received a petition from an official within the Students’ Union Government. The petition alleged that a sum of N1,000 was unlawfully collected from each 100-level student for practical sessions administered by the Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
In response, a Preliminary Fact-Finding Committee was promptly established to investigate the claims. All individuals named in the petition were reportedly given the opportunity to appear before the committee and respond to the allegations.
According to the university’s findings, Mr. Ogunjobi is alleged to have authorized and facilitated the collection of the N1,000 levy from the affected students without obtaining the necessary approval from the university’s Senate or management, and outside the institution’s approved payment procedures. Dr. Olaleye, despite his oversight role within Student Affairs, is accused of participating in the collection process.
Furthermore, the SUG President, Mr. James Iyanuoluwa Adio, is implicated through alleged indirect involvement. The university’s statement indicates his purported participation in the initial sharing of an unspecified sum and a subsequent demand for the return of funds, which allegedly resulted in N700,000 being transferred into his personal bank account.
FUOYE’s Unwavering Stance Against Corruption
FUOYE management confirmed that the three officials have been placed on suspension pending the conclusion of comprehensive disciplinary proceedings. The university emphasized that these allegations starkly contradict its ongoing efforts to combat corruption and extortion, asserting that such actions capable of damaging the institution’s image will not be tolerated.
Registrar Ibrahim underscored the university’s firm resolve, stating, “Management wishes to reiterate its unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and discipline within the university.” He further added, “The university will not tolerate the extortion of students, abuse of office, financial impropriety, or corruption in any form,” sending a strong message regarding the consequences of misconduct.
