The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has said that 2, 355, 655 number plates have been registered since the agency commenced the registration of new number plates about two years ago.

Also, the Directorate of Road Traffic Services, popularly known as VIO, has said that the June 2014 deadline given to motorists to have their plate numbers changed from the old to the new one may not be feasible.

The FRSC said more successes would have been recorded in the exercise but for its stoppage by the National Assembly for investigation.

Spokesman of the FRSC, Mr. Jonas Agwu, in an interaction with NL, said the FRSC produces number plates based on demand or order from the various states.

Although, both FRSC and VIO said the project was a success, they, however, added that there may likely be an extension of the deadline for the new number plate.

“Our records indicate that from January 2012 to December, 2013, the FRSC has churned out a total of 2, 355, 655. At this juncture, it should be noted that this figure could have been higher if not for the temporary stoppage of the process, in line with a National Assembly directive.

“Under the present arrangement, the FRSC undertakes the production based on demand or order from the various states. With the level of support received so far from the states, we are hopeful that every vehicle owner will key in to this transition plan by June 30 this year,” the FRSC said.
