An official of the Federal Road Safety Commission who took part in rescue effort has confirmed that at least no fewer than 25 persons have died after a bomb went off Thursday in Abuja.
He also claims that over 30 persons were injured.
The incident according to eyewitnesses ocurred at around 8 pm, directly opposite the site of the 14th April bomb blast which claimed 70 lives.
When the news broke, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). confirmed that six person died on the spot. The death toll soon rose to nine, while 14 more people were confirmed to have sustained injuries, bringing the number of people lying in Asokoro General Hospital to 20.
An eyewitnesses who spoke with us noted that, “the bomb was planted in a car close to the road.”
“The bomber was targeting the usual traffic in the area, but I know he must have been disappointed, because if it weren’t a holiday, more people would have died. That road is usually very busy. The tragedy could have been worse.” A combined team of security agencies arrived at the scene to cordon it off, while a crowd also gathered, causing heavy traffic on the road.
