World football governing body, FIFA, has congratulated Remo Stars FC on their historic triumph in the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, marking a major milestone as the first privately-owned club to win the title in over two decades.
In an official letter addressed to the club’s president and shared on Remo Stars’ social media, FIFA commended the team’s unwavering determination and performance throughout the season, which led to their first-ever top-flight league title. The message conveyed heartfelt congratulations to all players, staff, and officials of the club.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also acknowledged the efforts of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), under the leadership of Ibrahim Gusau, for its continued support of football development in the country.
Remo Stars clinched the championship after a convincing 4-1 win over Ikorodu City on Matchday 37 at their home ground in Ikenne. The club had already secured the title on Matchday 35, but the home fixture provided a perfect setting for the official trophy presentation, with fans turning out in celebration of the monumental achievement.
This victory holds historical significance for multiple reasons: Remo Stars have become the first private club to win the NPFL in more than 20 years and the first team from Ogun State to lift the trophy since the state’s creation in 1976.
Their success is not only a personal triumph but also a symbol of the growing potential of privately-run football clubs in Nigeria. It’s a landmark moment that may encourage greater private sector involvement and regional pride in Nigerian football.
