The Federal Government has imposed a seven-year ban on the creation of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
The move, approved during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, is aimed at curbing the unchecked growth of underutilized institutions and tackling overstretched resources.
Minister of Education Dr. Tunji Alausa, who proposed the policy, explained that the moratorium will help enhance the quality of education and ensure existing schools function at full capacity.
He noted that many federal tertiary institutions currently face challenges such as poor funding, inadequate infrastructure, and falling academic standards, making further expansion impractical for now.
The meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, gave the green light to the policy.
