The Federal Government has announced an increase in fees for Nigerian passport processing through the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). This decision, revealed by NIS spokesman DCI Kenneth Udo on August 21, 2024, aims to ensure the continued quality and integrity of Nigerian passports.
Starting September 1, 2024, the cost for a 64-page passport booklet with a 10-year validity will rise to 100,000 naira. The price for a 32-page passport booklet with a 5-year validity will increase from 35,000 naira to 50,000 naira. However, fees for passports issued abroad will remain unchanged.
The NIS expressed regret for any inconvenience this fee increase may cause but reassured the public of its dedication to transparency and high-quality service.
NIS cautions against mutilation of Nigerian passport
In related news, the NIS has reportedly questioned a woman after she was filmed mutilating a Nigerian passport at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The woman, identified as Favour Igiebor, allegedly destroyed a passport belonging to her husband.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a formal investigation following the circulation of a video on social media, showing a female traveller destroying a Nigerian Standard Passport at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
“The individual has been identified and invited for further investigation. If the allegations are substantiated, her actions would have constituted a breach of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act,” the NIS said following the incident.
