FG Approves Steps To Tackle Recession

The Federal Government has approved measures to tackle the current economic recession besetting the country. The Council of State also disclosed efforts to diversify the economy and focus on agriculture and solid minerals development.

Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode briefed the State House correspondents alongside his Jigawa State counterpart, Badaru Abubakar, saying that efforts were on to rescue the country from recession. He said the Minister of State for Budget and Planning made a presentation to the council on how the Federal Government was approaching the situation.

“Suggestions were made by council members. It was also resolved that those suggestions be imputed to whatever it is that the Federal Government is doing in order for us to fast track recovery,” he said.

The governor who expressed optimism that the efforts would go a long way in putting the country on the path of recovery, however, did not disclose the specific measures.

He said the council also approved Police Council’s appointment of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, as substantive IGP.He said the approval followed unanimous acceptance by members.

The Jigawa State governor added: “Most of the comments received proved to us that the IGP is of impeccable character and we expect him to conduct himself as such. We believe he is very honest and transparent. We also believe he will continue to be honest and do his best for the country.”

Ambode said the council also announced approval for the appointment of six new national commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

They are: Mohammed Haruna (North Central); AVM Ahmed Tijani Mu’Azu rtd (North East); Abubakar Nahuca (North West); Professor Okechukwu Ibanu (South East); May Agbamuche Mbu (South South) and Dr. Adekunle Ladipo Ogumola (South West).
