The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a public advisory warning Nigerians about the health risks of consuming too much salt. This follows the circulation of a viral video where Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Loveworld Incorporated (Christ Embassy), encouraged his congregation to increase their salt intake.

During a recent church service, Pastor Chris criticized mainstream health advice, claiming:
“They told you not to take salt so that you can buy their drugs—drugs that contain sodium. Salt is not your enemy.”

In response, the Ministry of Health advised Nigerians to adhere to evidence-based dietary recommendations and emphasized the dangers of misinformation regarding nutrition.

In an official statement signed by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, the ministry acknowledged the influential role of religious leaders but stressed that health-related misinformation could have serious consequences.

“We recognize the important role faith leaders play in our society, but it’s essential to correct misleading claims that may endanger public health,” the statement said.

Balogun explained that while sodium is a vital nutrient for nerve and muscle function, excessive salt intake is a major contributor to several chronic illnesses, including hypertension, stroke, heart disease, and kidney issues.

He also cited global health recommendations, noting:
“The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults consume no more than 5 grams of salt per day, roughly equivalent to one teaspoon.”

The ministry urged the public to rely on qualified medical professionals for nutrition advice and to approach unverified claims—especially those without scientific support—with caution.
