The Nigerian Federal Government has officially renamed the landmark 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway in honor of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, during a press briefing on Thursday.

According to Umahi, the renaming recognizes the President’s long-standing vision for the massive infrastructure corridor, which he reportedly conceptualized nearly three decades ago. The decision was finalized after consultations with top officials within the Ministry of Works, including the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, and various department directors.

A Vision 27 Years in the Making

Speaking on the development, Umahi emphasized the historical connection between the President and the infrastructure master plan.

“By the power conferred on me as the Honourable Minister of Works, and in consultation with the Permanent Secretary, the Minister of State, the directors and the entire staff of the ministry, we have decided to name the entire Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the minister stated. He added that the construction represents the realization of “a dream that Mr. President had about 27 years ago.”

Funding, Progress, and Public Controversy

The ambitious highway project, estimated to cost approximately N15 trillion upon completion, is designed to link Nigeria’s economic hubs along the southern coast. Regarded as one of the flagship legacy projects of the current administration, the first phases of the road are already nearing completion.

Since its official launch in March 2024, the coastal highway has been a subject of significant public debate and political scrutiny. Controversies have centered around the project’s massive budget, environmental considerations, and the demolition of properties along the right of way. However, the federal government maintains that the mega-project will ultimately transform Nigeria’s maritime economy and boost regional trade.
