The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday in celebration of the 2026 International Workers’ Day.

The announcement was made on Thursday, April 30, in Abuja by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the federal government.

The minister congratulated Nigerian workers for their continuous contributions to national development.

In a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, Tunji-Ojo praised workers across the country for their dedication and resilience.

He described their efforts as a major force behind Nigeria’s growth and economic advancement.

“The efforts of Nigerian workers are essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity,” the Minister said.

He also encouraged workers to remain committed to national progress.

Tunji-Ojo further urged employees in both the public and private sectors to uphold patriotism and maintain high productivity.

He stressed that such commitment is “crucial for sustainable development” as the nation continues on its present economic path.

The minister also reaffirmed that the federal government remains committed to the welfare and security of workers while creating a business-friendly environment that supports economic growth.

While wishing citizens a joyful celebration, he urged Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the holiday.

He also encouraged the public to use the occasion to reflect on the importance of unity and hard work in nation-building.
