We see them everywhere, everyday. Some of us are even culprits. Sometimes, they’re funny to look at; other times they’re downright pathetic. I’m talking about fashion faux pas. You don’t know what that means? Let me explain – a faux pas is a socially awkward act which violates social norms. In simple English, it is something you shouldn’t do, because it just isn’t right. Yeah, I know you’re thinking, “who makes these rules anyway?” Society does. Some of them are under contest, but others are backed-up by common sense. Today we’re going to be looking at some of the fashion mistakes we make everyday. Take a look, I know you’ve made at least one.
1. Sandals and Socks. This is a no-no! Big one too. The purpose of a sandal, I presume, is to show your legs of and give your toes a breath of fresh air; putting on socks just defeats this purpose. Keep the socks in your shoes at all times. Don’t even show up for work in sandals and socks. Only grandfathers who spend all day indoors are allowed to wear socks in their sandals.
2. Sagging Trousers. You over there, yes you; please pull up your trousers. Thank you.
3. Fanny Packs. Why is anyone still wearing fanny packs? This is the season of satchels, man purses and various stylish ways of carrying your belongings around. Next time you’re heading out, please leave the fanny pack at home.
4. Too many colours. Popularly known as “colour rioting” (and with good reason), this is actually a mistake I see around all the time. This faux pas has even been made more times than is legal by a certain artiste ( Hint: His name rhymes with AC) who even tagged himself a fashion icon. Stick to wearing at most, three colours. Or different shades of the same colour. As an extra tip, you can never go wrong with black.
5. Too many patterns. The pattern war is another mistake most people make. The rule of thumb is this; if you’re wearing a patterned shirt, wear a plain tie. If your tie is patterned, wear a plain shirt. If you really do feel like wearing more than one pattern, stick with patterns that complement each other. Choose a light print over a bold patterned skirt or trousers.
The list goes on, but I’ll stick with this just for today. What do you think should be on the list? What faux pas do you make? Share with us in the comments section. Have a nice day.
