New details from Ekiti suggests that  the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adewale Omirin has not been impeached.

What actually transpired on Monday was a that  10 Ekiti lawmakers sat to approve the reconstitution of the local government caretaker committees and confirmed the commissioner-nominees of Governor Ayodele Fayose, allegedly doing the bidding of the governor.

7 of the lawmakers were of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and one of them  Mr. Dele Olugbemi was appointed Protem Speaker to preside over the plenary.

The PDP lawmakers cited the absence of the Speaker, Dr. Adewale Omirin, and his deputy, Taiwo Orisalade, as reasons for the appointment of the Acting Speaker for the day’s business.

While the PDP maintained that 10 lawmakers actually sat, the All Progressives Congress (APC) say only 7 lawmakers sat illegally.

Governor Fayose, in a statement released this evening noted that the Speaker wasn’t impeached as earlier.

Read a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Idowu Adelusi below:

“Our attention has been drawn to the news that the Ekiti State Speaker has been impeached by 7 members. “Well, I am not suppose to respond to the lies aired purposely to misinformed members of the public because the legislature is another arm of government and whatever they do in their chamber is their business and the executive arm has nothing to do with that. “If they remove their leaders and appoint new ones, that is their business. “However, to educate the public, no speaker was removed. “Nine members of the House sat today to approve the commissioner nominees, Special Advisers and the Local Government Caretaker Committees for the 16 local government councils. “There are 26 members in the House and the House standing order allows a quorum of 9 members to sit and appoint speaker plenipotentiary to preside. “So, what transpired in the House is within the law. “APC are only being hypocritical. “APC-controlled state of Edo, we all know what is happening there. “For over a year now, the state governor has prevented the lawmakers from sitting. “He said he was going to renovate the Assembly Complex and PDP lawmakers have been meeting in the dilapidated complex, while APC lawmakers are meeting at the Government House. “Also another APC state of Rivers, the judiciary has been shut down for over a year too.”

Meanwhile, the APC through its State Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun in a statement released in Ado-Ekiti, accused Fayose of compelling the seven-member PDP caucus to sit and do his bidding.

The statement reads, “In his characteristic manner, Fayose this morning went to the hallowed chamber in company of armed soldiers and policemen, dreadfully garbed, and unleashed terror on the innocent assembly workers, forced his way in and compelled his 7-man PDP house members to sit and do his bidding.
“We condemn the act in its entirety and we call on all well-meaning Nigerians to support our clarion call to call Governor Fayose to order. We have not minced words to point out the series of constitutional infringements being committed by Fayose as Ekiti State Governor and this is just one in many. We are cocksure that this impunity will not stop.
“We also learnt that realising that it would require nine members to form a quorum in a 26-member house, Fayose also brought some strange men into the hallowed chamber to impersonate Honourable Assembly members in his attempt at ensuring a constituted quorum.
“He insisted that they must appoint a speaker among them and go ahead with legislative matters, forgetting that the house doesn’t hold plenaries on Monday. How bad can an impunity be?
“We condemn in categorical terms Fayose’s lawlessness and executive recklessness. His bully and arm-twisting tactics know no bounds and he is acting like an emperor who cannot be stopped. He has hijacked and pocketed the Judiciary and he believes there is nothing stopping him from taking over the legislative functions, as long as his gun-totting soldiers are at his beck and call.”
