The democratic spotlight shines brightly on Ekiti State today as no fewer than 1,059,360 registered voters head to the polling units to elect their next governor. The highly anticipated exercise, overseen by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is being conducted across all 16 local government areas of the state, marking a defining moment in Ekiti’s political trajectory.

As voters prepare to cast their ballots, several critical issues are expected to shape their decisions. Key concerns dominating public discourse include rising insecurity, the skyrocketing cost of living, infrastructure development deficits, public service delivery, and the contentious debate surrounding geopolitical zoning within the state. Today’s outcome will determine who leads the Land of Honour for the next four years.

INEC Confirms Readiness and Material Distribution

In the lead-up to the election, INEC ramped up its logistical operations to ensure a seamless voting process. Sensitive materials, which were housed at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) office in Ado-Ekiti, were successfully sorted and dispatched to all 16 local government areas under heavily fortified security.

Dr. Bunmi Omoseyindemi, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ekiti State, expressed unwavering confidence in the commission’s preparedness, reassuring voters and political stakeholders that all essential materials would arrive at their respective polling stations ahead of schedule.

Electoral data indicates a significant surge in civic engagement compared to previous cycles. The number of registered voters climbed from 987,647 in 2023 to 1,059,360 for this election. Furthermore, INEC revealed that an impressive 97 percent of voters have collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), translating to 1,028,929 cards in active hands. This milestone followed INEC’s decision to extend the collection window in mid-June to accommodate more citizens.

Electoral Act Reforms and Technology Limitations

In accordance with the Electoral Act 2026, the commission successfully processed 14,406 applications for replacement PVCs for voters who had lost or damaged their original cards. However, a proposed digital feature that would allow voters to download temporary copies of their cards was suspended for this cycle.

INEC clarified that the digital download option could not be deployed in Ekiti due to incomplete technology infrastructure. The commission assured the public that this technological upgrade is expected to be fully operational for the upcoming Osun State governorship election in August and the subsequent general elections.
