Dubai has commenced a 10-day period of official mourning following the passing of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the younger brother of Dubai’s Ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Sheikh Ahmed, who died on September 21, 2026, at the age of 76, was a prominent figure known for his extensive contributions across military, public service, and business sectors.
The announcement of his death and the subsequent mourning period, during which flags across the emirate will be flown at half-mast, was made by the Ruler’s Court.
A Legacy of Service and Leadership
Born in 1950, Sheikh Ahmed was the youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, a former Ruler of Dubai. His early education included a significant period at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, one of the world’s leading military training institutions.
Following his graduation, Sheikh Ahmed dedicated himself to the emirate’s defense, serving as the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai’s Central Military Command. In this pivotal role, he played an instrumental part in shaping and strengthening Dubai’s military infrastructure and capabilities.

Sheikh Ahmed’s commitment to Dubai extended beyond his military responsibilities. He held important public service positions, notably as the Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security.
