A driver miraculously escaped death on Monday morning after a 40-foot container fell onto his Toyota Camry, with registration number LSR 293 HJ, at Mile 2, en route to the Apapa Ports in Lagos.
The accident occurred around 8 a.m., according to eyewitness reports. The prompt response of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside emergency services like the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), ensured the driver was rescued alive.
The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital by the joint rescue team, where he received urgent medical care.
Security personnel from the Kirikiri Police Division maintained order at the scene, enabling smooth rescue operations. The Toyota Camry was safely extricated from beneath the container, while efforts to clear the fallen container were underway by 9:30 a.m.
LASTMA officers worked diligently to manage traffic congestion and restore normalcy to the area.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the importance of proper securing of containers by truck operators to prevent such incidents.
“Negligence in securing containers poses a significant threat to lives and property. Compliance with road safety protocols is essential to avert these avoidable catastrophes,” Bakare-Oki stated.
He reassured the public of LASTMA’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Lagos roadways and its collaboration with stakeholders to uphold traffic regulations and enhance public safety.
