Afrobeats icon Davido has voiced concerns over the changing dynamics of the global music landscape, suggesting that international audiences in the United States and United Kingdom are experiencing a sense of overfamiliarity with Nigerian performers. In response to this shift, he has advised his industry peers to redirect their focus toward their home country.

The ‘See Finish’ Effect in Western Markets

Speaking on a recent episode of The Uncut Podcast, the hitmaker used the popular Nigerian slang term “see finish” which implies a loss of respect or value due to overexposure to describe the dwindling novelty of African acts in major Western entertainment hubs.

According to Davido, the initial craze that saw foreign venues consistently sold out by Nigerian acts is beginning to wane as audiences become accustomed to the genre. “In the next 10 years, I want the music OGs to come back to Nigeria. There is already ‘see finish’ in London and America, honestly,” Davido remarked during the interview, emphasizing the need for a strategic pivot back to local roots.

A Drop in International Concert Sell-Outs

To support his observations, Davido compared the current touring climate to the booming market of recent years. He pointed out a noticeable decline in the number of Nigerian musicians capable of independently packing out massive overseas arenas.

“Three years ago, at least 20 artists could come to London, host a show, and sell it out. But now, I can count maybe four or five, and we all know them. We can all see the shift,” the superstar explained.

Davido’s candid commentary highlights a broader conversation within the music industry regarding market saturation and the sustainability of global tours. While international acclaim remains a significant milestone, strengthening the domestic live music ecosystem could provide the stability Nigerian artistes need to maintain their global influence in the long run.
