Renowned Nigerian music superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has publicly declared he will not be supporting the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential election. This definitive stance comes despite his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, having openly endorsed President Bola Tinubu.
Davido conveyed his position during an interview with News Central TV, captured in a video widely circulated online. The interview took place mere days after the Osun State governorship election results were announced, a contest in which Davido played a significant role.
Defying Familial Political Lines
The Grammy-nominated artist clarified that while his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, announced his support for President Bola Tinubu following his electoral victory, he, Davido, is not compelled to align with his uncle’s political choices. He underscored his autonomy in political matters.
Reflecting on his past political engagements, Davido recounted his active support for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar during their time in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. He also mentioned campaigning for the APC in 2015 when his late uncle was involved with the party during its initial merger.
“Defeated 17 Governors with Just a Phone”
Highlighting his personal impact in political campaigns, particularly the Osun State election, Davido made a striking statement: “I defeated 17 governors with all their power, with all their immunity, escort commanders, DSS, with all their billions. I defeated them with just a phone.” This emphasized his belief in the power of individual influence, even against formidable political machinery.
The musician articulated that his primary focus had been on contributing to the welfare of the Osun people and his family. He firmly stated, “You can’t force me to have a presidential candidate.”
No APC Support, Future Open
Speaking specifically about his uncle’s decision to back President Tinubu, Davido reiterated his personal neutrality. “My uncle, immediately he won, came out to declare his support for President Tinubu. But as for me, I am not prepared to support anybody,” he affirmed.
While maintaining a non-committal stance on a presidential candidate for the time being, Davido made one exception clear. “But right now, I don’t have a presidential candidate. It might change, sha. It’s not going to be APC, but everybody should have their own,” he concluded, leaving room for a potential endorsement of a different party or candidate in the future, but explicitly ruling out the ruling APC.
