Afrobeats heavyweight Davido has ignited a passionate debate, firmly pushing back against criticism from veteran APC praise singer Dauda Kahutu Rarara. The superstar asserted that genuine patriotism calls for direct action and vocal concern regarding Nigeria’s pervasive security challenges, rather than prioritising political optics or partisan allegiances.
The Spark of Controversy
The highly publicised exchange began after Rarara took issue with Davido’s appearance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles. During the event, Davido wore a custom jacket boldly emblazoned with the names of abducted pupils and teachers from Oyo State, alongside the powerful message, “Bring Them Home.”
Rarara, a vocal supporter of the ruling party, swiftly condemned Davido’s sartorial statement, arguing that broadcasting Nigeria’s internal security woes on an international stage could tarnish the nation’s image and undermine its standing.
Davido’s Resolute Defense
Initially, Davido’s response was a brief, dismissive social media post, which only prompted a further retort from Rarara. However, the ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ crooner soon followed up with a more comprehensive and impassioned statement, vehemently defending his actions and motivations.
According to Davido, bringing global attention to the harrowing plight of kidnapped children and their teachers should never be misconstrued through a narrow political lens. He adamantly maintained that to remain silent in the face of such widespread insecurity would be an egregious act of irresponsibility for any concerned citizen or public figure.
He underscored that the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens must inherently take precedence over any political considerations or attempts to manage national perception. His potent message to Rarara resonated widely:
“Damn it, every Nigerian should not stay silent about the insecurity plaguing the nation, nor should they prevent others from voicing their concerns openly. Showing bias and prioritizing personal or political interests, and putting personal desires above the community’s goals, is nothing to be proud of. Be a patriot for your country, stop prioritizing politics over the truth, and fear God in everything you do @kahuturarara.”
Beyond Political Divisions: A Call for Truth
Davido’s powerful rejoinder has amplified a crucial conversation about the role of public figures in addressing national crises. It challenges the notion that concerns about citizens’ safety should be suppressed to protect a perceived national image, instead advocating for transparency and a collective commitment to confronting difficult truths. The debate continues to underscore the tension between political loyalty and the fundamental duty to speak for the vulnerable.
