Former heavyweight champion David Haye has stressed the importance of a fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, describing it as the biggest possible contest for both men.
Excitement around the potential showdown grew earlier this month after Joshua and Fury exchanged words at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, reviving a rivalry that has seen several proposed bouts collapse in the past.
The fresh buzz came after Joshua attended Fury’s recent win over Arslanbek Makhmudov, increasing calls from fans for the long-awaited clash.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Haye suggested the delay could even work in their favour financially.
“Maybe they will earn more money now than they would have done when it was first talked about.”
Aside from the financial side, Haye believes the bout is vital to the legacy of both fighters.
“That’s the biggest fight they could both possibly have. They should be pushing it, they should be pressing it, they have to be,” Haye stated.
He added that both men need the contest to settle their place in this generation of heavyweight boxing.
“They both need each other, for their own legacies, different reasons. They both need to say Anthony Joshua was in the same era as Tyson Fury, vice versa, and they battled it out to figure out who won.”
