In a major strategic shift, Nigeria’s massive Dangote Refinery has ordered two cargoes of crude oil from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This transaction marks the first time the 700,000 barrels-per-day (b/d) facility is sourcing oil from the Middle East, signaling a departure from its historical reliance on African and United States grades.

According to sources close to the refinery’s operations, the move is designed to capitalize on returning oil supplies from the Middle East Gulf. The pivot comes amid shifting global market dynamics that have suddenly made Gulf grades highly cost-effective.

Capitalizing on Falling Gulf Prices

The deal follows a recent interim peace agreement between the United States and Iran, which guaranteed safe passage through the critical Strait of Hormuz. The diplomatic breakthrough has cleared the way for an exodus of tankers from the Persian Gulf, injecting a fresh wave of Middle Eastern supply back into global energy markets.

This surge in supply has sent regional prices tumbling. According to S&P Global Platts assessments, the price of the UAE’s flagship Murban crude dropped to $66.40 per barrel in late June, down nearly $6 below prewar levels. By securing these discounted cargoes, Dangote is seizing a prime economic opportunity to lower its overall refining costs.

A Shift to a Merchant Refining Model

Although the mega-refinery was originally configured to process Nigeria’s native light sweet crude, company executives have increasingly pushed to diversify its feedstock options. Founder Aliko Dangote and Chief Executive Officer David Bird have previously expressed ambitions to integrate heavier, sour, and generally cheaper crudes into the refinery’s daily operations.

Bird, who assumed leadership at Dangote in 2025 after heading Oman’s Duqm refinery, is steering the facility toward a fully flexible, merchant refining model. His goal is to expand the refinery’s processing capabilities from roughly 40 distinct crude grades today to more than triple that figure in the future.

Evolving Crude Sourcing Strategy

The UAE’s main export offerings include light sour grades such as Murban, Das Blend, and Umm Lulu, alongside the medium sour Upper Zakum. Incorporating these sour grades represents a technological milestone for the Nigerian facility as it scales up production.

The refinery’s sourcing profile has evolved rapidly over the last two years:

  • 2025 Imports: Data from S&P Global Commodities at Sea reveals that Dangote sourced 70% of its crude locally from Nigeria and 24% from the United States.
  • 2026 Diversification: The refinery has expanded its imports to include Angola’s Cabinda and Saxi Batuque, Ghana’s Jubilee crude, and initial shipments of light and medium sweet grades from Libya and Guyana.

While Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has declined to comment on the transaction, industry analysts view this first Middle Eastern purchase as a defining moment that positions Dangote as a highly competitive, global-scale merchant refiner capable of taking advantage of pricing arbitrage across international markets.
