CUSTOMS INTERCEPT ARMS, AMMUNITION CONCEALED IN TOKUNBO

The Ports and Terminal Multiservices Limited (PTML) Command of the Nigeria Custom Service(NCS) has intercepted arms and live ammunition concealed in an imported used car .

The ammunition were accompanied with one Smith and Wesson shotgun, one revolver and one Bushnell sniper rifle.

Speaking on the seizure, the PTML Customs Area Controller (CAC) Mr. Tajudeen Olanrewaju said that the arms and ammunitions were concealed in a used GMC suburban vehicle,(1999 model), with chassis number 764650, imported from the United States of America.

Olanrewaju  added that in the course of examining the container with registration number PONU8071808, the customs examination officers discovered; 1 Smith&Wesson shotgun, 1 revolver, and 1 Bushnel Sniper rifle (model 710) hidden inside the container.

The analysis of the live ammunition also revealed that there were; 52 rounds of 38mm caliber, 48 rounds of 9mm caliber, 36 rounds of 9.0mm caliber, together with two empty magazines contained in the vehicle.

We suspected the container and suspended its clearance process which the agent had earlier commenced.

Olanrewaju noted that the consignee did not present any permit explaining that import of such falls under absolute prohibition list and if it must be imported the consignee must have a permit.

Adding that the suspect arrested in connection with the seizure is in the customs custody while investigation continues but the clearing agent in charge of the job (names withheld) is from ChimbudikeShipping Agency has been arrested.

Speaking on the security implication of the cargo, the custom boss noted that the seizure is remarkable as it is coming at a time that the country is facing a lot of  security challenges.
