Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has offered a detailed, first-person account explaining his departure from the Portugal national team camp. In a lengthy personal statement released on X on Tuesday, the 41-year-old captain accused coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking promises made to him, ultimately leading to his walkout.

A Detailed Account of Events

Ronaldo’s statement clarifies the circumstances surrounding the recent national team training camp. He recounted how, after the 2026 World Cup, he had prepared a farewell letter to the Portuguese people. However, Federation President Pedro Proença urged him to continue playing. Ronaldo then expressed his support for Jorge Jesus as the new coach, believing it to be the ‘right choice’ given the team’s current results.

Following Jesus’s appointment, the coach met with Ronaldo to outline his plans. Ronaldo stated, ‘He told me he was counting on me and that my presence was fundamental to his project. He presented me, right there, with a plan for my participation. He told me I would play the first match and the last one, and that for reasons of physical management he would always make three to four changes per match.’

Ronaldo also revealed he rejected an early suggestion to skip trips to Norway and Denmark. He considered it inappropriate, stating, ‘It seemed obvious to me that I could not accept it. It was not because I would not play the matches abroad that I would stop captaining our team. That privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example.’

The Breaking Point: Two Broken Promises

The initial plan appeared to proceed smoothly when Ronaldo played against Wales, was substituted, and handed the armband to Bruno Fernandes without issue. However, the situation dramatically changed on the day of the Norway match.

‘To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me if I was fit to play 30 minutes,’ Ronaldo wrote. Despite this request falling outside his planned recovery, he agreed. ‘He replied that I should then be ready because I would play 30 minutes. The rest everyone knows. I warmed up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and was not called. The coach had broken his word to me.’

Ronaldo acknowledged his own failure in not greeting fans after the game, taking full responsibility for that oversight. A subsequent private meeting involving Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho aimed to resolve the issue, with an agreement that Jesus would publicly clarify the situation at the next press conference. Ronaldo claimed a short list of points was prepared and validated for this purpose.

However, Ronaldo asserted that the actual press conference did not align with what had been agreed. ‘It was the second time that he was breaking the word he had given me,’ he explained. ‘I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word. For me, the truth is still the most important thing in relationships between people.’

Future with the National Team

In his statement, Ronaldo extended apologies to his teammates and the Portuguese public for his walkout. He also accepted that the federation should impose any applicable punishment without mitigation, emphasizing that ‘the rules are equal for everyone.’

Regarding his international future, Ronaldo firmly rejected any notion of ceremonial farewell matches. ‘When I think about the national team, what I really think about is competing,’ he stated. He affirmed his availability to ‘compete and win for our National Team’ if he remains physically well, continues playing and scoring for his club, and after serving any potential suspension. ‘This is, believe me, the purest of truths,’ he concluded.
