Chelsea have entered surprise negotiations to sign veteran Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka from Sunderland, signaling a potential U-turn in the West London club’s strict youth-centric recruitment philosophy. While the Blues have established contact with the 33-year-old’s representatives, Sunderland have responded firmly, insisting that their captain is not for sale.

A Potential Reunion and Leadership Boost

Xhaka, currently representing Switzerland at the World Cup, is understood to be open to the move. A transfer to Stamford Bridge would reunite him with Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, with whom he won a historic Bundesliga title at Bayer Leverkusen in 2024. Although personal terms have yet to be agreed, Chelsea’s interest stems from a desire to inject veteran leadership into a squad that has faced criticism over its dressing-room culture and lack of guidance.

A Radical Shift in Chelsea’s Recruitment Philosophy

Pursuing Xhaka, who turns 34 in September, represents a complete departure from the recruitment strategy overseen by co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali. Over the past two seasons, Chelsea have consistently fielded the youngest team in the Premier League, without selecting a single player aged 30 or over. However, club leadership now acknowledges that recruitment adjustments are necessary, particularly in adding proven characters to steady their youthful ranks.

Sunderland Stand Firm

Sunderland are under no financial pressure to sell and have no intention of letting their star midfielder leave. Under head coach Regis Le Bris, the Black Cats enjoyed an exceptional campaign, finishing seventh and securing Europa League qualification ahead of Chelsea on the final day of the season. Xhaka was instrumental to this success, missing just four league matches and earning widespread plaudits as the team’s on-field leader. He remains under contract on Wearside until 2028.

Wider Stamford Bridge Shake-Up

The pursuit of Xhaka comes amid growing speculation over the future of Enzo Fernandez, who is heavily linked with a £120 million move to Real Madrid. The Spanish giants, spearheaded by president Florentino Perez and manager Jose Mourinho, are rumored to be driving interest in the Argentine World Cup winner.

Chelsea’s summer transfer activity extends beyond the midfield, with several squad changes on the horizon:

  • Marco Palestra: The young Atalanta right-back is on the verge of sealing a move to Stamford Bridge.
  • Marc Cucurella: The Spanish defender has already completed a permanent switch to Real Madrid.
  • Uncertain Futures: A host of first-team players, including Alejandro Garnacho, Liam Delap, Malo Gusto, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, and Tosin Adarabioyo, face unresolved futures.
