Chelsea have agreed a sensational club-record £117 million deal to sign Aston Villa and England midfielder Morgan Rogers. The 23-year-old is set to sign a long-term six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, which includes an option for an additional year, as new manager Xabi Alonso builds his squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Rogers, who has just returned from international duty with the Three Lions at the 2026 World Cup, is scheduled to undergo his medical on Monday. The blockbuster move represents a historic moment in English football, breaking the national transfer record for an English player. The £117 million fee narrowly eclipses the £116 million Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.
Breaking Club and National Records
The deal also marks the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history, surpassing the £107 million fee paid for Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023. It represents an astronomical rise for Rogers, who joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial fee of £8 million, potentially rising to £15 million.
Middlesbrough are set to receive a significant windfall from the transfer. Due to a 20% sell-on clause on any profit made by Aston Villa, the Championship club will pocket at least £20.4 million—believed to be a record sell-on fee in English football history.
A Key Asset for Xabi Alonso
During his highly successful two-and-a-half-season spell at Villa Park under Unai Emery, Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances. He was an integral part of the squad that secured Europa League glory last season. Internationally, Rogers has earned 21 senior caps for England, scoring once, and featured in six matches during the recent World Cup tournament.
Chelsea’s acquisition of Rogers is a major statement of intent. Despite finishing a disappointing 10th in the Premier League last season and missing out on European football, the Blues have managed to beat London rivals Arsenal to secure one of their long-term transfer targets.
Squad Rebuilding at Villa Park
Rogers becomes the second high-profile midfielder to leave Aston Villa this week, following Youri Tielemans’ £35 million departure to Manchester United. However, Villa have been active in the market to cushion the blow, securing Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for over £50 million and targeting Wolves’ midfielder Joao Gomes in a proposed £38 million deal.
