Well-known Nigerian entertainer and social activist Charles Oputa, popularly called Charly Boy, has strongly criticized his fellow citizens for their perceived complacency in the face of bad governance. In a video message shared on his social media platforms, the veteran artist, also known as Area Fada, expressed deep concern over what he described as a widespread failure among Nigerians to demand accountability from their leaders.
The Symptoms of a Failing System
During his address, Charly Boy pointed out several critical areas where he believes basic human rights and essential amenities have been degraded to luxury items. He argued that the current socio-economic issues are symptoms of a deeper systemic failure, highlighting that decent roads are now treated as a privilege rather than a right, while stable electricity is reserved only for the wealthy class.
He also touched on the staggering inflation in the country, noting that food prices can skyrocket tenfold overnight without any resistance or questions from the populace. He questioned the logic of calling such an environment a functional nation.
A Call for Citizen Responsibility
Beyond blaming the political class, the Area Fada directed significant criticism toward the public. He argued that a nation cannot truly exist or thrive without active, responsible citizens. Instead of demanding better governance, Charly Boy lamented that many Nigerians choose to distract themselves with online entertainment and comedy, thereby normalizing the systemic breakdown.
He expressed deep disappointment in the way citizens react during election cycles, pointing out that many still turn out to cheer on corrupt politicians during campaigns. Despite Nigeria possessing vast natural resources and immense potential, Charly Boy concluded that the country remains trapped by a combination of poor leadership and a largely silent, passive population.
