The family of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez has publicly declared their support for the death penalty for David Burke, the 21-year-old musician known professionally as D4vd, should he be convicted of murdering the teenager.

The Family’s Plea for Justice

In an emotional statement provided to the New York Post, the family of the victim expressed their deep grief and anger over the horrific tragedy. “If the death penalty were activated, it would be perfect for this kind of human being, devoid of feelings and emptiness inside, and without conscience,” the family stated, adding that the defendant “only caused pain to our daughter, our family, and the world.”

However, the family acknowledged that the ultimate decision does not rest with them. “But that’s not in our hands, but rather in God’s, and the California justice system,” the statement continued. The determination of whether prosecutors will seek the death penalty rests in the hands of Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.

Severe Charges and Trial Background

Burke has pleaded not guilty to several severe charges, including murder, child sexual abuse, and mutilation in connection with the teenager’s death. The young girl’s dismembered remains were discovered approximately one year ago, sending shockwaves through the community.

A Transition in Legal Counsel

The latest developments follow a significant shake-up in Burke’s legal defense team. Last week, his private attorneys Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski, and Regina Peter formally withdrew from the case. The court subsequently appointed the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office after confirming that Burke qualified for public counsel.

In a statement regarding their departure, the former defense lawyers stated, “We continue to support David and his defense against these serious charges,” while expressing gratitude that a capable team from the Public Defender’s Office has stepped in.

Walid Kandeel, the Los Angeles County Deputy Public Defender assigned to represent Burke, offered condolences to the victim’s family while emphasizing the commitment to a fair trial. “We recognize the loss of life underlying the allegations and extend our sympathies to those who are grieving,” Kandeel said in a statement to the Los Angeles Times. “At the same time, David Burke is entitled to a defense that takes his circumstances seriously and carefully examines the evidence.”
