Calabar, Cross River State – Authorities have apprehended 60 individuals, including numerous traders from the bustling Watt Market, following a harrowing assault on a police constable last Wednesday, September 16. The widespread arrests came after the officer was allegedly manhandled, robbed, and subjected to a humiliating attack involving pepper and eggs, all stemming from an attempt to impound a motorcycle.

The incident unfolded earlier, on September 11, when the constable, while on duty at Goldie by Etim Edem Lane, reportedly had his leg accidentally run over by a motorcycle. When he attempted to impound the vehicle, the rider fled. However, the situation quickly escalated as roadside traders allegedly intervened, aiding the motorcyclist’s escape and turning their aggression towards the lone officer.

Narrating his ordeal, the constable recounted being “confronted and assaulted by some roadside traders who aided the rider to escape.” He detailed how his riot gun was “tampered with,” his “uniform and shoes were torn,” and his “Samsung X10 mobile phone was taken.” Adding to the indignity, the officer claimed that “pepper and egg were poured on his face and body,” and the motorcycle was forcibly retrieved from him, ensuring the rider’s getaway. He also stated his ability to identify several of his attackers.

Upon receiving information about the assault from a concerned citizen, a patrol team from the Atakpa Police Division swiftly moved to the scene to rescue the beleaguered constable. Reacting to the gravity of the situation, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, issued a directive for the Command to immediately gather intelligence, identify all parties involved, and ensure that anyone found culpable was arrested and prosecuted without delay.

Confirming the extensive operation, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), stated that on the morning of Wednesday, September 16, patrol and surveillance teams from the Atakpa Police Division, reinforced by operatives of the Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU), moved into the area and apprehended the 60 suspects. “The suspects are currently undergoing screening and interrogation, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other persons who may have participated in the incident,” Akata added.

The arrests send a clear message regarding the authorities’ commitment to upholding law and order and protecting its personnel. The police anticipate further arrests as investigations continue into the brazen assault.
