Grammy award-winning artist, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has stirred controversy once again after claiming that only the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti ranks above him in greatness.
The Afrobeat superstar made the bold statement during a Twitch stream with PlaqueBoyMax, where he effortlessly rapped along to Fela’s lyrics before making his declaration.
With a confident smile, Burna Boy said: “Fela is the king. He’s the only one greater than me,” and went on to crown himself the “001 of the Afrobeats music industry.”
The clip spread rapidly across social media, causing heated conversations. Many supporters hailed him for acknowledging Fela’s unmatched legacy, saying it proves Burna is the rightful successor to the Afrobeat throne. Others, however, criticized him for arrogance—fueling the ongoing debate that regularly pits Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido against each other in the “Big Three” music rivalry.
Burna Boy has always celebrated Fela as his biggest inspiration, taking cues from the legend’s rebellious energy, activism, and rhythmic style in his own music.
With the Twitch video dominating online trends, fans seem divided, but one thing remains undeniable: Burna Boy continues to leave a powerful mark on African music, boldly asserting his place among the continent’s greatest.
