British singer and rapper Khyra Wilson, professionally known as Kwn, has cleared up long-standing misconceptions about her heritage. Despite widespread assumptions that she is of Caribbean descent, the ‘Worst Behaviour’ artist revealed that she is actually of mixed Nigerian and Irish parentage.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Culture podcast, Kwn opened up about how her upbringing influenced her musical style and identity. She explained that growing up in an environment heavily steeped in Jamaican and Caribbean culture naturally shaped her artistry, leading many fans to misidentify her roots.

A Cultural Influence, Not Ancestry

‘I am half-Nigerian. Everyone thinks I am Jamaican but I am not. I grew up around Caribbean culture so people assume I am from the Caribbean,’ Kwn clarified during the interview.

The rising star detailed her family background, sharing that her father is Nigerian and her mother is Irish. Despite her clear African lineage, she noted that people are often taken aback when she shares her true background, as her musical style heavily mirrors West Indian sounds.

‘People find it difficult if I tell them I am Nigerian. Nobody has ever guessed that I am Nigerian until recently when someone guessed it. Everyone thinks I am Caribbean,’ she added.

Hopes for a Future Visit to Nigeria

Although she proudly claims her Nigerian identity, Kwn admitted that she has not yet had the opportunity to travel to her father’s home country. However, she remains highly optimistic about making the trip in the future and connecting with her West African roots.

Expressing confidence in the bond she hopes to build with her Nigerian audience, she said, ‘I have never been to Nigeria before. I know they are going to love me when I go over there.’
