A Nigerian woman, Lucy Tsegba, has taken to Facebook to grieve the loss of her mother and sisters, who were tragically killed during a violent attack by suspected herdsmen on Yelewata, a border community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attack, which occurred on Friday, reportedly left over 200 people dead in Yelewata, a town located near the Nasarawa State boundary.
In a heartbreaking Facebook post on Sunday, June 15, Lucy confirmed the devastating news, writing:
“Oh, My beloved mum. And beautiful sisters…go well till we meet again. I love you but God loves you more. I will forever miss you…I can’t stop crying. Kai God u do me strong thing,”
Reports indicate that at least 107 people lost their lives, with many others suffering injuries and currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
Eyewitnesses say the assailants burned entire families alive — including men, women, and children — by setting homes ablaze after dousing them with petrol. Roadside stalls and makeshift shelters were also torched.
Among the victims were Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from communities like Antsa, Dooka, Kadarko, Udei, and Giza, who had sought refuge in Yelewata believing it would be safer due to the proximity of security checkpoints.
