Students of the University of Lagos disrupted all academic activities on Monday morning, after venting their displeasure over an unwanted invasion of the hostels by bed bugs.

The main gate leading into the school premises was shut for about 4 hours on Monday morning preventing motorists from gaining entrance as students bring out their beds and sleep on the roads leading into the school.

The heavy downpour did very little to discourage the protesters as more students are trouping out in large numbers to join the protests at press time, Naijalog gathered.

Naijalog gathered that the protest started from the male hostels in the early hours of Monday morning, the female halls failed to join the protest initially because they were not allowed out their hostels.

One of the hostels, Sodeinde was the first point of call for the protesters, after Minutes of argument with security, hall executives,the gate was finally opened for sodeindites to join the protest.

NL gathered that an incident where a Marire hostel resident screamed from sleep, and his room mates discovered several bugs over his body and bed was a major reason for the outbreak of the protest.

Protesters who spoke under condition of anonymity claimed that “Sniper” (an insecticide) had become a daily routine before sleep, one of such respondents claimed that his room mate was recently rushed to medical centre because he could not breathe properly because of the smell of “Sniper”.

The students are frustrated that the efforts of the school to fumigate hostels in recent months have yielded no results, and are calling for immediate action from the school authorities.

All efforts to speak with university authorities on the matter at press time. yielded no results.
