Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has weighed in on the ongoing conversation regarding the financial realities of reality TV stars after leaving the show. Phyna threw her weight behind fellow ex-housemate Tochi’s advice, urging former contestants to look beyond their celebrity titles and find practical ways to earn a living.

The Reality Behind Hyped Brand Endorsements

Reacting to the pressure placed on reality stars to secure endorsements, Phyna criticized the culture of measuring success solely by brand deals. She claimed that many of the highly publicized multi-million naira endorsements are exaggerated for public relations. According to her, a brand might sign an influencer for 5 million Naira but instruct them to announce it as a 50 million Naira deal to maintain a certain image.

Phyna further explained how management fees drain the actual earnings of these celebrities, leaving them with little to nothing. She noted that after agencies deduct their standard 25% cut from the actual, lesser payment, the reality stars are often left with empty pockets despite their high-profile status.

Moving Past Classism and Celebrity Ego

Emphasizing the need for authenticity, the reality star expressed relief that people are finally speaking out about the financial struggles of former housemates. She urged her colleagues to stop letting classism and the pressure of maintaining a high-class celebrity image prevent them from engaging in honest, lucrative hustles.

Here are some of the key revelations shared by Phyna regarding the reality TV lifestyle:

  • Many announced multi-million naira brand deals are inflated for public relations purposes.
  • Management agencies often take up to a 25% cut, leaving the talents with significantly reduced payouts.
  • The pressure of maintaining a high-class celebrity image prevents many ex-housemates from seeking regular business opportunities.
