The leaders of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have decided to go underground following alleged threat to their lives by security agents.

Academic activities in the public universities across the country have been grounded for the fourth month running as a result of the strike by the universities’ teachers to press home their demand for the implementation of the agreement they entered into since 2009.

The union in a statement by the chairman, University of Ibadan (UI) chapter, Olusegun Ajiboye alleged that university teachers have been under the siege of security agents nationwide by beaming searchlight on their sources of financedespite the stoppage of their salaries by the Federal Government.

In the statement titled, “ASUU Strike: Union Leaders Go Underground”, Ajiboye alleged that he had received some calls, warning him about his role in the ongoing strike and called on the Inspector General of Police (IG) to safe the lives of ASUU leaders nationwide.

He, however, maintained that no amount of threat or clampdown on the union would make them back down from the strike “until public education is saved from collapse.”
