The leadership of the All Peoples Congress (APC) has apologised to Ibrahim Shekarau, former governor of Kano State over its inability to visit him when they came to Kano to woo Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso to join the party.

A chieftain of the party, Odigie Oyegun, former governor of Edo State, made the remark on Thursday in Kano when he led a national delegation of the party to visit Mr Shekarau.

“Under no circumstances shall we turn our back on Shekarau, the APC and its leadership in Kano State because the state is critical to the APC,” he said. “Shekarau is one of the architects of merger negotiations because when there was difficulty in the merger talks, he came up with a solution. Shekarau is very important to the party as he was among those who played a key role during the merger negotiations.”

In his remark, Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State said the APC was concerned about the socio-economic problems confronting the country.

“We want to address the various socio-economic challenges facing the country, hence the resolve by the various opposition parties to come together and chase out the ruling party,’’ he said.

Mr Yari said the delegation was in Kano to apologise to Mr Shekarau for its inability to visit him during the recent visit of the APC national leadership to the state.

“Because of the mistake we committed during that visit, the national leadership of the party felt it is necessary to send this delegation to come and pacify you,’’ he said.

In his response, Mr Shekarau expressed gratitude to the national leadership of the APC for sending the “powerful delegation” to visit him.

He called on those wishing to join the party in the state to do as they would be welcomed.
