Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger has officially called time on his international career with Germany. The 33-year-old center-back announced his decision to step down from international duty, concluding a highly impactful 12-year journey with the four-time world champions.
Rüdiger’s announcement comes two months after representing Germany at the 2026 World Cup, where his final cap was earned in a round-of-32 fixture against Paraguay. Over his illustrious international career, the former Chelsea star amassed 86 appearances for the national team.
Clearing the Way for the Next Generation
Reflecting on his decision, Rüdiger expressed a desire to allow the national team’s younger talent to emerge. “After some time reflecting, the moment has come for me to end my national team career and clear the way for the young generation,” the defender stated in his social media announcement.
Rüdiger made his senior debut for Germany in May 2014 against Poland, just a month before the nation went on to win the World Cup in Brazil, though he was not a member of that tournament’s squad. His crowning achievement on the international stage came in 2017, when he played a vital role in securing Germany’s FIFA Confederations Cup title.
Shifting Focus to Real Madrid
Born in Berlin, Rüdiger’s football journey took him through the youth academies of Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart. He went on to enjoy successful spells at AS Roma and Chelsea where he lifted the UEFA Champions League in 2021 before joining Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2022. Rüdiger confirmed he will now direct all his energy toward his club commitments.
“A new chapter begins for me now, in which I will focus entirely on my club,” Rüdiger added. “Even though the big title eluded us in recent tournaments and we had to endure some painful defeats, this time was an incredibly special chapter for me one that will shape me forever.”
