The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has detained David Effiong, a masquerade performer who was reportedly seen parading the streets, just days after the governor officially outlawed such displays. Effiong is expected to face legal action for breaching the new directive.
Arrest Follows Governor’s Recent Ban
Governor Umo Eno recently introduced a strict prohibition on public masquerade appearances, warning that any individual caught showcasing or roaming in masquerade attire would be immediately arrested and prosecuted.
The governor explained that the decision was prompted by repeated complaints of masquerades frightening residents, causing disturbances, and extorting money under the guise of cultural display.
In line with this directive, police officers in the state apprehended Effiong after he was reportedly seen causing a disturbance in full masquerade costume.
Police Confirm Prosecution Plans
According to police sources, the suspect will be taken to court to answer for his actions.
The official statement reads:
“Days after the Akwa Ibom State Governor ordered the arrest of masquerades found on the streets. the Akwa Ibom State Police Command apprehended David Effiong, who was spotted in full masquerade regalia disrupting public peace as he set to be charged to court accordingly.”
