Adidas Chief Executive Officer Bjorn Gulden has addressed the overwhelming presence of pink football boots at the World Cup, describing the visual uniformity across competing sportswear brands as an unintentional coincidence.

Speaking during a press conference covering the company’s quarterly financial results, Gulden responded to inquiries regarding the unusual dominance of identical footwear shades worn by top players throughout the tournament.

An Unintended Overlap Across Brands

“It was an accident,” Gulden acknowledged when questioned about the monochromatic trend on the field. “I think it’s a coincidence, and I hope it will not happen again.”

Adidas ends its relationship with Kanye West in a €250 million deal after he wore a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt.

While noting that pink remains an attractive aesthetic choice for footwear, the chief executive admitted his surprise that multiple rival manufacturers selected the exact same hue simultaneously. Sportswear giants typically keep prospective design palettes tightly guarded ahead of major global tournaments.

“Pink is a good colour, no doubt. But that we all ended up with the same is strange,” Gulden remarked, adding that Adidas has no visibility into upcoming product designs from rivals like Nike, Puma, or New Balance.

Why Pink Dominated the World Cup Pitch

Industry analysts and brand representatives have put forward several reasons for the sudden surge in pink footwear during the matches:

  • High Visual Contrast: Neon and vibrant pink shades pop clearly against green turf, maximizing television and stadium brand exposure.
  • Player Preference: Nike football footwear product manager Odinga Nimako previously noted that many athletes gravitate toward pink boots as an outward expression of confidence and flair.
  • Retailer Communication Gaps: Gulden pointed out that third-party retailers usually flag identical color schemes across competing brands before launch, though no warnings were raised this cycle.

Reflecting on the visual fatigue caused by the duplicate styling, Gulden offered a frank assessment of the situation: “Retailers normally would tell you… but we didn’t hear anything. And shame on us, I think no one liked it.”
