Japanese actress and singer Miho Nakayama, 54, was found dead in her Tokyo home just hours after sharing a cryptic Instagram post ahead of her scheduled Christmas concert in Osaka.
Known for her celebrated career in the 1980s and 1990s, Nakayama’s body was discovered in her bathtub, seated upright and leaning forward. Tokyo Metropolitan Police are investigating the circumstances, considering possible drowning, illness, or an accident as causes.
Her final Instagram post featured a work by French artist Louise Bourgeois, embroidered with the words: “I have been to hell and back. And let me tell you, it was wonderful.” In her caption, Nakayama wrote, “I was so depressed for a few days that I could only talk to the friend I went with.”
Nakayama, affectionately called “Miporin” by fans, gained international recognition for her role in the 1995 movie Love Letter, which earned her several best actress awards. She was also a prominent figure in J-pop and starred in numerous hit TV shows.
Her agency confirmed her death in a statement, expressing shock at the sudden loss. Fans gathered at the concert venue were emotional upon learning the devastating news.
Nakayama is survived by her son, who remains in the custody of her ex-husband, musician Hitonari Tsuji.
