A Witness to Abuja’s Rapid Structural Evolution

For over two decades, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has experienced varying phases of urban development. However, the current wave of modernization under the leadership of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has captured the attention of long-term residents and political figures alike. Most recently, Uche Nwosu, a former governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in Imo State, openly commended Wike for executing an aggressive infrastructure renewal program that is reshaping the face of the nation’s capital.

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, Nwosu highlighted the palpable improvements in the city’s road networks, transit systems, and public utility facilities. Reflecting on his personal experience of living in the capital for over 25 years, Nwosu noted that the current scale of construction is unprecedented and stands as a testament to focused leadership.

Key Projects Redefining the Federal Capital Territory

According to Nwosu, the transformation is not merely conceptual but is visible in several high-impact projects that have improved connectivity and reduced traffic congestion. Some of the landmark interventions under Wike’s administration include:

  • Apo Road and the critical Maitama Bridge project.
  • The Jahi Bridge and the strategic Jahi–Gwarimpa interchange.
  • The dualization and expansion of the Airport Expressway to Kuje Road.
  • The critical Kuje–Gwagwalada Road linkage.
  • The main carriageways of the Outer Southern Expressway (OSEX).
  • Extensive adjoining road networks throughout the rapidly developing Katampe District.

Nwosu emphasized that these developments have significantly boosted economic activities and eased the daily commute for thousands of residents across the six area councils.

Judicial Welfare and Global Aspirations

Beyond the extensive transit networks, the former governorship candidate also praised Wike’s focus on institutional support, pointing specifically to the ongoing construction of the judges’ quarters. Nwosu described this project as a critical milestone in enhancing the welfare and security of judicial officers, suggesting that similar administrative interventions should be extended to other public sector agencies.

He argued that as the diplomatic and political heart of Africa’s most populous nation, Abuja must compete favorably with other global capitals. Sustained investments in infrastructure, environmental cleanliness, and public safety, he noted, are crucial to elevating Nigeria’s international image and ensuring a hospitable environment for both citizens and visitors.

Navigating Praise and Criticism

Since assuming office in August 2023, Minister Wike’s governance style has generated significant national conversation. While his aggressive infrastructure drive has earned him substantial praise, his tenure has not been without controversy. Critics have frequently pointed to stringent land administration reforms, selective property demolitions, and the need for more comprehensive investments in social services and rural communities.

Nevertheless, Nwosu maintained that the visible physical developments cannot be overlooked. He described Wike’s performance as one of the most impactful in the history of the FCT, calling on stakeholders to support initiatives that raise the city’s standards to a global level.
